15 Most Unhealthy Breakfasts You Should Never Eat

9. Fruit Juice

Fruit juice benefits from a health halo simply because it’s derived from fruit, which most people rightly consider a healthy food. The problem is what happens during the juicing process. When fruit is juiced, the fibre, which is the part of the fruit that slows down how quickly sugar enters your bloodstream, is largely removed and discarded. What’s left is essentially fruit sugar dissolved in water, with very little to stop it from being absorbed rapidly.

This means a glass of orange juice, despite coming from a genuinely healthy fruit, causes a much faster blood sugar spike than eating an actual orange would. It’s also far easier to overconsume sugar in liquid form. Eating three or four whole oranges in one sitting would be filling and difficult for most people, but drinking the sugar equivalent of three or four oranges in a single glass of juice takes seconds and doesn’t feel like much at all, since liquid calories don’t trigger the same fullness signals as solid food.

Many commercial juices, particularly juice “drinks” or blends rather than 100 percent juice, also have additional sugar mixed in, compounding the issue further.

Better choice: Eat whole fruit instead, which gives you the fibre, vitamins, and a much slower, gentler rise in blood sugar. If you do want juice occasionally, keep the serving small, around a small glass rather than a large one, and choose 100 percent juice rather than a sweetened juice drink.
