15 Most Unhealthy Breakfasts You Should Never Eat

13. Granola

Granola is one of the more deceptive items on this list because it genuinely starts from healthy ingredients: oats, nuts, and seeds. The problem lies in how commercial granola is typically made. To get that satisfying crunchy, clustered texture, manufacturers coat the oat and nut mixture in oil and a sweetener, usually sugar or honey, before baking it. This process, while it creates a delicious product, also significantly increases the calorie and sugar density of what started as a fairly light, whole-food mixture.

Because granola is served as a “topping” rather than a full bowl, portion sizes are often small, around a small handful, but people frequently pour a much larger serving than they realise, especially over yoghurt or milk. A generous bowl of shop-bought granola can carry as many calories as a full cooked breakfast, along with a notable amount of added sugar, despite looking and feeling like a “light” choice made of wholesome ingredients.

The healthy-sounding branding on granola packaging, often featuring words like “natural” or “wholegrain,” makes this one particularly easy to overeat without realising it.

Better choice: Make your own granola at home, where you can control exactly how much oil and sweetener goes in, or choose plain oats, nuts, and seeds mixed together yourself rather than a pre-sweetened, oil-baked version. Keep portions to a genuine small handful if using shop-bought granola.
