5. Breakfast Sausages

Breakfast sausages sit in a similar category to bacon: a processed meat that’s undeniably tasty but not something your body benefits from eating daily. Most shop-bought sausages are made from a mix of meat, fat, and fillers such as breadcrumbs or rusk, bound together with salt and preservatives to give them shape and shelf life.

The salt content is often the biggest concern. Two typical breakfast sausages can contain close to half of the recommended daily sodium intake for an adult, and that’s before you’ve added anything else to the plate, like bacon or baked beans, which also carry their own sodium load. High sodium intake over time is one of the most well-established dietary contributors to high blood pressure, which raises your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Sausages are also typically high in saturated fat, since fat is often deliberately included to keep the meat moist and flavourful during cooking. Combined with the processing methods used to preserve them, regular consumption of sausages fits into the same “processed meat” category of concern as bacon.

Better choice: Look for sausages with a higher meat content and lower salt, such as chicken or turkey-based options, and treat them as an occasional addition rather than a daily staple. Grilling rather than frying also helps reduce the amount of extra fat in the final dish.
