8. How Are Total Loss Payouts Calculated?
If your car is ever declared a total loss after an accident, understanding how the payout is calculated in advance can prevent a lot of frustration later. Ask your agent to explain the actual cash value method used, including how depreciation, mileage, and condition are factored in, and ask whether gap insurance is available or recommended if you still owe money on a car loan. Ask as well whether you have the right to dispute the valuation and what evidence, such as comparable local sale prices, would strengthen that dispute if you ever needed to make one.
If you have a car loan or lease, gap insurance is particularly worth discussing, since a new vehicle can lose a significant portion of its value in the first year or two, potentially leaving a real gap between your loan balance and the insurer’s payout after a total loss.
