2. Not All Discounts Are Applied Automatically
You might qualify for a good student discount, a low mileage discount, a multi-car discount, or a dozen other savings opportunities without your insurer ever mentioning them. Many discounts require you to specifically ask or provide documentation. Insurance companies are not required to proactively apply every discount you are eligible for, so it is on you to ask what is available.
This happens because many discounts require documentation, such as proof of a completed driving course, a transcript showing a student’s grade point average, or confirmation of a security device installed in your vehicle, and insurers are not always proactive about requesting these documents from you.
Quick tip: Ask your agent for a full written list of every discount the company offers, then go through it item by item to see which ones you may already qualify for without realizing it.
It is worth remembering that discount eligibility can change over time too, so a discount you did not qualify for a few years ago, perhaps because your mileage was too high or your credit score was lower, might apply to you now without your insurer ever flagging the change.
